Checklist for Identifying Yourself as a Writer by Mary Davis

Mary Davis
Anyone else need a pick-me-up? Someone to come along and say, "Oh, you do that too?" Today, Mary Davis shares a list of oh-so-relatable fiction writerly items. I chuckled as I read. Enjoy! ~ Annette

You know you're a fiction writer when...

…you fall asleep at night with pen and paper in hand.
…you go shopping at a physical store for your imaginary character’s wardrobe.
…you have an argument with one or more of your characters and lose.
…your made-up story feels more tangible than your real life.

…you’re afraid to bring up a touchy subject with one of your characters for fear of how they might react.
…you base your meal menu around your characters’ preferences.
…you talk to real people about your characters as though they exist outside your novel.
…you talk to your fictional characters about your real friends.
…you bundle up in your winter clothes, crank up the AC, and blast Christmas music in July to write a Christmas story.
…you get mad at your character for making poor choices.
…you feel helpless to stop or control your characters.
…you give your character an adventure just so you can tag along.
…you choose your wall paint color in your house based on your character’s preferences.
…you try something new (something you would never do) because your character dared you to.
…you rewrite the ending to another author’s book or movie in your head because you didn’t like how it ended.
…you tiptoe to the bathroom in the middle of the night to not disturb your characters, because if they wake up, they will start chattering and you’ll never go back to sleep.
…you make up an entire backstory for the person crossing the street in front of your car while you are stopped at a red light.
…your characters’ opinions matter more than real people’s.
…your characters don’t need to follow the shelter-in-place order because of a pandemic, so your life goes on as though nothing is amiss in the outside world because it really doesn’t affect you.

How many of these have you experienced?

Ways to tell if you're a fiction writer. #SeriouslyWrite #amwriting
