Lending a Helping Hand

Last weekend, my husband was taking care of landscaping in the front yard. Alan had finished cutting the grass and using the weedeater. He was gathering his tools and preparing to put everything away. With the mower and weed eater back in the garage, he walked to the front yard to pick up the extension cord and wrap it around the holder.

A group of about ten children were playing in the yard next door and across the street. We are blessed to have a wonderful neighborhood filled with loving families.

From newborns to teenagers, moments are filled with laughter and fun when the kids are outside playing. Alan and I enjoy listening to the families having fun together. Soccer balls, toy trucks, bicycles, dolls and more are often found in the yards and on the sidewalks as everyone has fun.

As Alan reached down to pick up the orange extension cord, a little boy around 2 years old, walked and stood beside him. Without saying a word, this sweet boy smiled and picked up part of the cord to help. He held the cord and then handed different sections to Alan.

The father of this sweet boy stood close by watching. Laughing, he said, “Thanks for letting him help. He loves to be a helper.”

Alan and this young boy worked together until the cord was completely wrapped and ready to put away.

Smiling, the boy walked back to his Daddy and friends.

This whole scene made me think of how writers help each other without ever being asked. Writers often share the blog posts of other writers. They share upcoming events with their social media circles. Writers encourage and support each other with comments on posts, congratulations on accomplishments and more.

There are times when a writer may hit a “block” and need inspiration and encouragement. I am thankful to writers who help each other.

We have unique gifts given to us by God. By lending a helping hand, we can show His love to others. Whether you are helping put away an extension cord or offering support and encouragement to another writer, keep up the good work. You may be a blessing to someone in need.
