Sharing A "Made Up" Story

When our son Mike (who is now 37 years old) was a young boy, I often “made up” stories to share with him at bedtime and/or nap time. Each story was different and often, was created at the last moment. As our son placed his head on the pillow for rest, I pulled the covers up for him and watched as he began to relax.

I’m not sure if Mike remembers any of the stories. That’s okay because I remember some of them.

There were plenty of books to read. We visited the library weekly, participated in story hour and purchased many books to enjoy at home. Yet, there were times when I wanted to share a story I created in my imagination.

Starting with details about the characters, like a little boy who became a prince, I left the ending open so we could continue the story another time. The delight on the face of our young son soon let me know the “made up” stories would be a hit.

Most times, the story developed as I spoke. Other times, a plot twist would enter my mind or our son would add his own details. From funny happenings to pirate adventures to dinosaurs roaming the land, the imagination of Mike and myself provided laughter and a wonderful bonding experience.

Whenever we reached a point of  “Wonder what happened next?”, I knew creativity was flowing in both of us.
This creative outlet helped in everyday skills, helping teach manners, compassion and kindness to others.

Have you ever “made up” a story while sharing time with a child? How did you use your facial expressions and body actions to express the emotions in the story? Let us know your examples.
